zithobeni residents cancel march against foreignowned shops

Angry residents of Zithobeni township in Bronkhorspruit, Gauteng, have cancelled t heir march to the city centre, where they had planned to shut down foreign-owned shops .

The cancellation of the march follows an engagement between the residents and local police earlier today.

Yesterday, the outraged residents went from shop to shop removing snacks, before setting them alight.

This comes after about 25 learners from the Mshuluzane Mayisela Primary School fell ill after allegedly consuming snacks they bought from street vendors outside the school.

Community leader Johnson Shibambo says police must act swiftly to ensure that spaza shops only sell safe food products.
