Woman Caught In Rip Currents Saved At Mossel Bay's Dias Beach
A local fisherman in Mossel Bay has been hailed as a hero for saving a woman trapped in rip currents at Dias Beach on 18 December. The 31-year-old woman from George had gone for a midnight swim when powerful rip currents swept her away during the Spring low tide. At 0057, the National Sea Rescue Institute NSRI Mossel Bay was alerted to the potential drowning, and a swift response team, including emergency services and rescue swimmers, rushed to the scene.
Upon arrival, they found the woman safely on the beach, where paramedics treated her for non-fatal drowning symptoms, but she did not require further medical attention. While struggling in the water, the woman was spotted by a group of local fishermen fishing from the shore. One fisherman quickly cast his line with a Kabeljou hook and successfully caught her jeans, allowing him to reel her closer to shore. Another fisherman then helped her to safety in waist-deep water, just as rescue teams arrived.
