Will The Unfinished Freeway In Foreshore Finally Be Complete?

It looks like the City of Cape Town is finally taking steps toward resolving the long-standing issue of the incomplete Foreshore freeway. However, the proposed solution might not be what locals expected, reports Cape town Etc .

For as long as residents can remember, progress on the freeway has been stalled, to the point where the unfinished structure has become a familiar part of the citys landscape.

The bridge has remained incomplete since 1977, largely due to provincial authorities reserving a road corridor along Buitengracht Street for the project. This restriction was finally lifted in 2023, allowing the City to explore new possibilities.

Now, the City is conducting a feasibility study to assess whether an elevated railway could be built on the existing platform instead of completing the bridge.

The proposed 6-kilometre rail route would link Woodstock Station to Sea Point, with the entire journey - including stops - taking less than 10 minutes. Trains would run at an average speed of 60-70kph.
