The City of Cape Towns Disaster Risk Management Centre DRMC has been put on high alert after the South African Weather Service SAWS on Wednesday issued an advisory for high temperatures over the next few days, reports Cape town Etc .

According to the advisory for hot to very hot and uncomfortable conditions, the Cape Winelands , the West Coast, the interior of Namakwa and the City of Cape Town are expected to experience high temperatures from Thursday, 3 April, to Sunday, 6 April.

Temperatures will peak at around 33C in some areas of the Cape Metropole on Thursday.

In light of the upcoming Two Oceans Marathon this weekend, DRM spokesperson Sonica Lategan is advising runners and members of the public to be cautious, stay hydrated and limit outdoor activities as far as possible to reduce the risk of heat exposure.

DRMCs tips to follow to beat the heat:
  • Drink plenty of water, use water in spray bottles to cool down, carry a wet cloth/face towel to wipe the face and neck when hot and submerge feet in cold water to help regulate blood flow and cool the body.
  • Seek relief in covered public spaces such as shopping malls and libraries.
  • Wear a wide-brim hat, lightweight and loose clothing, and take cool showers or baths.
  • Limit outdoor activity to earlier or later in the day.
  • Take action at the first sign of a heat-related illness like muscle cramps, heavy sweating, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, fainting, confusion, a fast pulse and high body temperature. Seek emergency medical assistance immediately.

Lategan also advised community members to keep an eye on vulnerable individuals, including the elderly, pregnant women and young children, as well as to make provisions for pets by ensuring they have access to shade and plenty of fresh water.
