The Western Cape Government has expressed its support for the recent decision by Minister of Health Dr Aaron Motsoaledi to withdraw the controversial regulations that prohibited the sale, importation, and manufacture of foodstuffs containing hemp and cannabis, reports Cape town Etc .

This pivotal move has paved the way for a more inclusive dialogue surrounding the burgeoning hemp and cannabis industry, garnering enthusiasm from various stakeholders, including business and health experts.

Minister of Agriculture, Economic Development and Tourism, Dr Ivan Meyer, hailed the withdrawal as an opportunity for comprehensive public consultation.

He stated, This will allow for comprehensive public consultation, ensuring that all voices, including those of business and health experts, are heard. This will lead to the development of policies and rules that support the potential of the cannabis and hemp industry to generate jobs, improve public health, and boost economic growth.

The announcement comes on the heels of the implementation of the Western Cape Department of Agriculture's Western Cape Cannabis Framework and Implementation Plan, known as Can Plan, launched in March 2023.
