weather alert cutoff low pressure system developing near cape town

A quasi-stationary slow-moving Cut-Off low pressure system has developed west of South Africa and is currently approximately 1600km north-west of Cape Town.

The Cut-Off low pressure system will likely result in changes to weather conditions from Wednesday afternoon, 20 November, until Thursday morning, 21 November, Cape town Etc reports.

The areas of the Overberg region, southern Cape Winelands and south-western Garden Route will likely experience thunderstorms with heavy downpours, hail, damaging winds, flash flooding and excessive lightning.

In addition, Cut-Off lows are closely associated with occurrence of damaging floods in the country, as they cause strong atmospheric instability. Rough sea conditions and significant drops in temperature may also be expected.

The storms caused by these pressure systems are known to be highly unstable, erratic and occasionally life-threatening.
