Wealthy Kzn Prisoners Allegedly Buying Hospital Stays, Dodging Prison
The South African Prisoners Organisation for Human Rights SAPOHR president Miles Bhudu says unless the Department of Correctional Service is politicised, corruption will remain prevalent in the countrys prisons.
This is as the department has launched an investigation into allegations that wealthy inmates are bribing officials for special treatment.
Reports suggest that some wealthy prisoners are paying for hospital holidays and buying their way out of regular prison conditions in KwaZulu-Natal.
It is alleged that these are prisoners serving time at the Durban Westville Prison and New Prison in Pietermaritzburg.
For as long as a minister is not going to take us seriously and as long as the national commissioners are deployees, who, in fact, are not interested in their daily duties to keep correctional facilities accountable. So that correctional services keep prisoners accountable and implement the mandate of the correctional service.
