Jan Vermeulen, the editor of Mybroadband, has warned credit cardholders to be cautious about where they use their cards.
This advice comes after reports of fraudulent transactions linked to Facebook.
South Africans have reported that scammers are draining their accounts through Facebook.
Vermeulen explains that Facebook is vulnerable to fraudsters because it doesn't require transaction authorization through the bank app.
It seems that a number of peoples credit card details were compromised, either harvested or stolen, possibly through a data breach. Cybercriminals then use these details on Facebook to purchase advertising credits, or perhaps other services. Most likely, these criminals buy advertising credits, as this allows them to promote scams and other illegal activities on Facebook using stolen funds.
