Voter Expectations Ahead Of Gabon Polls

Gabon voters are hoping for improvements to public services and more jobs as the country prepares for its first presidential election since a 2023 coup ended the Bongo familys 56-year rule. Rachel Graham has more.

Saturdays election comes after military officers led by Brice Oligui Nguema seized power - ending the Bongo familys 56-year rule.

Nguema is the front-runner, having secured constitutional amendments allowing him to run - and faces seven other candidates including former prime minister Alain Claude Bilie By Nze.

Whoever wins, Gabonese voters collecting their electoral cards on Wednesday said there were a number of changes they hope to see from the new administration.

Of urgency for Gabonese people are social issues, water, electricity, we talk about it every day. So, this is a primary urgency because we dont want to have this anymore, these daily power cuts.

What I want is for the crime in greater Libreville to decrease. The new president who will be elected should try to put law enforcement at certain intersections to reduce crime in Libreville. There is too much crime in Libreville. You cant go home at any hour and get robbed every time, its not good.
