vertiv unveils new highdensity battery cabinets for data centres

Vertiv, designer of rapidly deployable customised solutions for data centres, has released a new lithium-ion battery solution optimised to have a smaller footprint and lower total cost of ownership in high-density environments such as data centres.

The Vertiv EnergyCore battery energy storage system comes in pre-assembled 16 or 18-module models providing 27,6 kWh or 31,1 kWh respectively. The 600 mm battery cabinets can operate across a wide range of temperatures, having completed the UL 9540A fire test.

Successful completion of this test waives 92 cm-spacing requirements between racks. Lithium-ion batteries are lighter and more compact than valve-regulated lead-acid battery alternatives, allowing users to deploy fewer cabinets, making this a more compact and lighter solution that saves floor space.

The company says the Vertiv EnergyCore is the first optimised battery cabinet designed by experts for data centre users.

The cabinet has an internal, two-hole lug, eliminating the need for a conduit box or external control wiring. It is equipped with an interactive touchscreen HMI display for controlling the operating system and installed batteries.

The integrated battery management system does not need an external power source as it is instead powered by the cabinet batteries. The cabinet provides lifetime onboard data storage that tracks battery performance through charge-discharge-charge cycles and service events to give accurate state-of-health reports for warranty support and predictive analytics.

The proliferation of artificial intelligence and other high-performance computing applications is putting a premium on the ability to deliver more power in smaller, hotter spaces, said Milind Paranjape , Vice President Energy Storage at Vertiv.
