Us Funding Cut Threat Raises Concerns For Sa Businesses: Saccusa
The South Africa Chamber of Commerce in the United States SACCUSA has expressed deep concern over the possible impact on SA businesses after United States President Donald Trump threatened to cut America's funding to the country.
Trump posted to his Truth Social platform that SA was confiscating land and treating certain classes of people very badly and that the US would not stand for it.
In a statement, SACCUSA says America obligated nearly 440 million in assistance to the country in 2024, supporting various healthcare and social initiatives and that the suggestion that US funding would be cut raises serious concerns for the South African business community, particularly in light of the longstanding economic and trade relationship between the two nations.
The chamber says that the potential revocation of the African Growth and Opportunity Act AGOA benefits would significantly impact SA businesses, leading to job losses and economic instability.
It further emphasised the need for diplomacy and constructive dialogue to strengthen economic ties and address concerns through appropriate channels.
