The US embassy in South Africa has warned Afrikaners applying for refugee status to beware of scams or potential exploitation.

In an update on Tuesday 11 March, the embassy said access to the US refugee programme is free.

No one should pay any fees or favours in return for access to the programme or to unauthorised individuals claiming to be able to assist or expedite your resettlement case, it added.

Applicants should expect all official communication to come from PretoriaPRMInfostate.gov. They should immediately report any instances of fraud to the same email address, the embassy said.

In February, US President announced that the resettlement programme is open to Afrikaners escaping government-sponsored race-based discrimination, including racially discriminatory property confiscation.

Writing on X on Tuesday, the embassy said consistent with Trumps executive order, the US is considering refugee resettlement for disfavoured ethnic minority Afrikaners facing unjust racial discrimination in South Africa.

If you have already submitted an inquiry, we are reviewing messages and will contact you if we need more information, it added on its website.

In a post on Truth Social on 7 March, Trump reiterated his refugee offer, saying it comes with a rapid pathway to citizenship.

Initial reports from the South African Chamber of Commerce in the US SACCUSA suggested that there was a high number of enquiries about the programme from Afrikaners.

However, civil society groups AfriForum and Solidarity, which advocate for Afrikaner rights, have maintained that they wish to remain in South Africa.
