Update Lions Winger Edwill Van Der Merwe Swims With The Sharks After Lions Contract Expiry

The Sharks unveiled Springbok and Lions winger Edwill van der Merwe as their latest acquisition yesterday, shortly after the Lions revealed that he had decided not to renew his contract with the union at the end of the season.

The 28-year-old flyer had sparked a Sharks feeding frenzy when it was announced that he would not be extending his stay on the highveld.

According to reports, the Sharks in Durban and the Sale Sharks in Manchester were both keen on the services of the elusive runner with a strong all-round game.

He has opted for the coastal climes of Durban, however, and put pen to paper on a deal to link up with John Plumtree's side. The Sharks announced the unveiling of the fleet-footed star with a highlight reel featuring of some of his dazzling moments.

Van der Merwe has been a star for the Lions in recent seasons. He also put in an outstanding performance in his sole Test match for the Springboks in 2024, scoring a try in the victory over Wales at Twickenham.
