Unconfirmed Number Of Prisoners Escape Prison In Mozambique
An unconfirmed number of prisoners have escaped from the Maximum Security Prison in Machava, Maputo, amid protests against the results of Mozambique's recent general elections.
Reports indicate that the prisoners managed to overpower the guards at the facility and flee, reportedly seizing several AK47 rifles in the process. Mozambican journalist Bright Sonjela suggests that protesters, taking advantage of the tense situation in the country, may have assisted some of the prisoners in their escape.
"People have exploited the protests. Since the protests began over the election results, demonstrators have been going to prisons to release others. This escape occurred just after the government announced plans to free some prisoners," Sonjela explained.
While initial reports suggested that up to 6,000 prisoners had escaped, social activist and journalist Clemente Carlos estimates the number to be around 150. However, these figures remain unverified.
