Un Envoy Condemns Ceasefire Collapse, M23 Expansion In Drc

The United Nations Special Envoy for the Great Lakes region, Huang Xia has condemned the collapse of the ceasefire in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo DRC and the territorial expansion of the M23 rebel group.

Xia has urged the warring sides to cease hostilities and engage in dialogue to prevent further bloodshed.

Fighting between government forces and the M23 rebels has intensified in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo since late last year.

The rebels recently captured the key town of Masisi in North Kivu province forcing hundreds of civilians to flee their homes.

The UN Special Envoy has condemned the violence and called on both sides to engage in dialogue.
