Umhlanga Beach Reopens After Poo Balls Episode
Umhlanga Beach has reopened after a temporary closure following the discovery of hundreds of balls of human waste along the shoreline Tuesday morning.
Ward 35 Councillor Bradley Singh, who posted a video of the poo balls, alerted the eThekwini Municipalitys Wastewater Department, which promptly cleaned up the area.
The origin of the poo balls remains a concern. However, preliminary investigations, according to Councillor Singh, suggest that someone may have illegally connected a sewer line to the storm water line.
Heavy rainfall then caused pressure to build up, pushing the waste onto the shoreline.
Singh elaborates, This happened early in the morning. The eThekwini Municipality Wastewater Department was on sight immediately. The beach was closed yesterday, but today its open. So, the Department of Health as well is currently investigating the matter. Water Department will put up cameras through the line to see where this illegal connection has come through and obviously the perpetrator will be brought to book.
