Uefa To Reconsider Double Touch Rule After Alvarez Penalty Controversy

uefa to reconsider double touch rule after alvarez penalty controversy

UEFA announced on Thursday that it would review the penalty rule following controversy surrounding Atletico Madrid's Julian Alvarez, whose penalty was disallowed during their Champions League shootout loss to Real Madrid.

The disallowed spot-kick, which came in a 4-2 shootout defeat after a 2-2 draw on aggregate, was ruled out by VAR, which determined Alvarez had kicked the ball twice.

The Argentina forward was judged to have made contact with the ball using his standing foot before scoring.

UEFA confirmed that under the current rule, the VAR decision to disallow the goal was correct, as the player's standing foot touched the ball before the strike.

However, UEFA also announced it would open discussions with FIFA and the International Football Association Board IFAB to potentially review the rule, particularly in cases where a double touch is unintentional.
