uber implements passenger and luggage restrictions in sa

Ride-hailing platform Uber has introduced new passenger and luggage capacity guidelines for its services in South Africa, effective 14 April.

New rules for Uber riders in South Africa

The rules aim to balance rider comfort, safety, and vehicle space, particularly when luggage is involved.

Under the updated policy, passenger limits vary by service type:

  • Uber Go allows a maximum of two riders.
  • Uber X, Comfort, and Black permit three passengers each.
  • Uber XL and Van accommodate up to six and seven passengers, respectively.

All categories permit luggage, though the company advises travellers to confirm space availability directly with drivers. The e-hailing platform added in its official blog post that the guidelines are advisory and may depend on vehicle size. "If unsure, we recommend contacting the driver to confirm," the company stated.

The move follows efforts to standardise safety and comfort amid varying trip demands.
