Two suspects have been shot dead in a shootout with police at Thembeni in KwaDukuza, north of Durban.

KwaZulu-Natal police say the suspects were wanted for cases of murder and robbery.

It is alleged that when their vehicle was intercepted by an intelligence driven police operation, the suspects opened fire and a shootout ensued.

The vehicle that the suspects were travelling in has been confirmed to be a police vehicle however police say that so far investigations have not revealed a link to between the suspects and a police officer.

Police spokesperson, Robert Netshiunda, One firearm was found in the possession of the suspects. A police officer was saved by a bullet resistant vest after he was shot three times on the chest. He will be taken through the Employee Health and Wellness programmes for counseling. Preliminary investigations have thus far revealed that the vehicle which the suspects were travelling in belongs to a police officer. No linkage has thus far been established between the officer and the deceased suspects who have thus far been linked to four murder cases, one attempted murder case and one house robbery. A search is still ongoing for other suspects who are believed to part of the syndicate.
