Two suspects have been killed in a shootout with police in Brackendowns, south of Johannesburg. Hawks spokesperson Katlego Mogale says the incident took place yesterday afternoon, following a multi-disciplinary police operation. Mogale says when police identified the suspects vehicle, the suspects opened fire, prompting officers to return fire, resulting in the fatal injuries.
"The identified suspect vehicle made its way toward the R59 and upon realisation that the multi-disciplinary team is tactically approaching, the suspects fired at police. A shootout ensued when police returned fire, fatally wounding the two suspects in the vehicle which was affixed with false registration plates. The suspects vehicle continued to flee but they drove into a ditch. Police recovered two unlicensed firearms, a rifle and a handgun, ammunition for both firearms, cellphones and gloves. Investigation is under way to ascertain if the suspects were involved in other aggravating robberies in and around Johannesburg.
