Two suspects arrested for the illegal possession of firearms and ammunition in separate incidents in the Western Cape will appear in the Athlone Magistrates Court soon.

Police spokesperson Joseph Swartbooi says a stop and search operation, which officers conducted in Heideveld on the Cape Flats, led to the arrest of a 27-year-old man.

He says another suspect, 69-year-old, was arrested in Swellendam and officers recovered a firearm and ammunition in his vehicle.

They approached a suspicious man, searched him and recovered a .38 special revolver found in his possession. They detained the 27-year-old man. Swellendam police were busy interviewing a complainant who informed the police member the suspect was in possession of an unlicensed firearm. The police member searched the suspect and expanded the search to the motor vehicle belonging to the suspect where they recovered a pistol with ammunition between the luggage. They detained the 69-year-old man.
