The South African Police Service (SAPS) in the Eastern Cape are yet to identify the two people killed alongside the suspected Mthatha extortionist Dalinzolo Mareke.
The three were killed in a shootout with officers at the police bas e near Mthatha last night.
Police say the shooting incident happened after the suspects confronted officers about an operation that they had conducted at the home of one of the suspects.
One police officer was wounded.
The O.R. Tambo District Police Commissioner, Major-General Phumzilo Cetyana says, That is a behaviour that we cannot allow because inside the police base-This was part of protecting the base as well because the confrontation took part in the base and allegedly they first shot the police and the police retaliated and acted appropriately."
