Tshwane Mayor Admits Corruption Issues, Calls For Faster Action

Tshwane Mayor Dr. Nasiphi Moya has admitted that corruption is a problem in the Municipality and that it is not being dealt with quickly enough. This comes as the Citys deputy mayor, Eugene Modise, is under investigation after the Auditor Generals office flagged a security contract allegedly linked to Modise.

The Democratic Alliance DA has urged Moya and the City Manager Johann Mettler to look deeper into Modises business affairs.

Moya says they are dealing with the matter. We are saying were not going to shy away when wrongs have been committed. We cant shy away because if we do, we are contributing to the culture that the AG has said to us is actually crippling this institution. On the issue of the Deputy Executive Mayor, I think we have explained before that allegation was put to us, and when then asked him to respond, he said the appointment was made way before he was a councilor or deputy executive mayor and he had resigned when he had become councilor. But then they said were dealing with an issue of public trust here.

Moya says they are dealing with many forensic probes in the municipality. Corruption is rife, and if youre not acting on financial misconduct, youre going to have a problem. The other one is our amount of irregular expenditure, unauthorised wasteful expenditure. And AG says we dont investigate quickly enough. As a Mayor, Im dealing with a backlog of one thousand forensic investigations that span back to 2012. So, all of those we are now dealing with.
