Trump's Trade War Should Push Europe Toward Economic Independence

European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde called on Europe to pursue greater economic independence on Monday, urging the continent to take control of its future as US President Donald Trump prepares to impose a fresh round of tariffs.
Trump has designated Wednesday as Liberation Day, announcing reciprocal tariffs on various trade partners, claiming the US has been ripped off by every country in the world.
In response, Lagarde told France Inter radio that Europe faces an existential moment.
Trump calls it Liberation Day,' she said. But I see it as a moment when we must collectively decide to take greater control of our destiny, and I think it is a step towards independence.
Lagarde emphasised the need for Europe to assert its strength in trade negotiations. To put ourselves in a position to negotiate effectively, we have to show that we won't just roll over, she added.
