The South African Communist Party SACP has embarked on what it calls a peoples march to the National Treasury in Pretoria against the high cost of living.
The SACP is joined by their alliance partners the African National Congress ANC and Congress of South African Trade Unions Cosatu. The party delivered a memorandum of demands to the Ministry citing austerity measures and unemployment as concerns.
SACP General-Secretary Solly Mapaila say, "We want to relieve the poor for instance implement the Social Relief of Distress Grant SRD as a universal basic income and multiply it so that it can be above the basic poverty line and in that way its a direct action to the poor. It gives something to the poor so that it can buy bread because essentially that thing is also an inside its an important thing. We need it to be properly implemented in that persons life so that they dont live with indignity and in poverty."
