A Grade 4 student from Hibernia Primary School in George died on Wednesday, 4 September, after accidentally swallowing a R5 coin, Cape {town} Etc reports.
Cape {town} Etc spoke to Millicent Merton, a spokesperson for the Department of Education, who provided details about the incident.
We are deeply saddened by the death of an 11-year-old Grade 4 learner, Merton said.
It is suspected that he accidentally swallowed a coin while entering a classroom on Wednesday, 4 September, 2024.
Despite the efforts of skilled first aid responders, the pupil passed away.
