The Institute for Security Studies says targetting gun-related crimes will make South Africa safe .

The institute held a seminar in Pretoria to discuss the prevalence of gun-related crimes and how police can be empowered to respond to them.

This is in light of the gunning down of 18 people in Ngobozana village in Lusikisiki in the Eastern Cape and seven others in Orange farm in Gauteng.

Some of the firearms used in the commission of violent crime are stolen from police.

Policing expert David Bruce believes by tracing illegal firearms, contact crimes including rape, murder and robberies would be drastically reduced.
