Timeline Goma Under Siege, M23s Advance

In January 2025, the March 23 Movement M23 in the Democratic Republic of Congo DRC took control of a significant portion of the North and South Kivu provinces as part of their military campaign.

Thirteen South African National Defence Force SANDF soldiers have been killed in clashes involving the M23 rebels and the DRC army.

The SANDF personnel are in the DRC on a United Nations UN Peacekeeping mission.
