Mining company Tharisa has entered into a long-term power purchase agreement (PPA) with Etana Energy to supply 44% of its Tharisa Mines electricity through wheeled renewable energy procurement.

The mine north of Pretoria will receive its power demand from wind and solar farms in the Western Cape and Northern Cape through the national grid as part of a 15-year agreement.

The new facility is scheduled to become operational in 2026. It will complement the 40 MW solar power plant at the mine, which is being developed by TotalEnergies Renewables South Africa and Chariot Transitional Power South Africa, which is designed to fulfil 30% of Tharisas energy requirements.

The two projects will help Tharisa achieve its goal of reducing its carbon footprint by 30% by 2030.
