tensions remain high in south sudan following machars house arrest

Tensions remain high in South Sudan following the house arrest of the countrys first Vice President, Riek Machar.

He is accused of being behind clashes between government forces and the White Army, a militia that fought alongside Machars forces in the civil war in the Upper Nile State.

Under a peace deal that ended the 2013-2018 civil war between forces loyal to Machar on the one hand and South Sudan President Salva Kiir on the other, the two have been serving in a fragile coalition government.

South Africa has urged all parties to exercise restraint and called for a peaceful resolution to the crisis.

The peace agreement in the East African country hangs in the balance as the government has accused Machar of trying to stir up rebellion.
