Police have been deployed to Sharpeville in the Vaal after a businessman was fatally shot and shops belonging to foreign nationals were looted.

The situation remains tense as police continue to fire rubber bullets to disperse those looting shops.

Gauteng police spokesperson Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi says those responsible for the fatal shooting of the shop owner are yet to be identified.

Currently a number of tuck-shops have been looted and the stock was burned by community members. The Public Order Policing together with Crime Prevention Units are on the ground monitoring the situation. During their patrols, they have arrested three foreign nationals who were found in possession of unlicensed firearms.
