Peter Obi, the Labour Party LP presidential candidate in the 2023 election, has called on the federal government to hold a public hearing before enacting the proposed tax reform bills.
In a statement released on Monday, Obi emphasized the significance of tax reform, noting that while it is a critical issue, it should be approached with transparency and public involvement.
However, such reform must be subject to robust and informed public debate. A public hearing on tax reform is essential, allowing Nigerians from all walks of life to engage meaningfully, he said.
The former governor of Anambra State stressed that a public hearing would foster trust and inclusivity, ensuring that policymaking reflects the needs and perspectives of all citizens.
Matters of this magnitude require extensive deliberation and careful considerationthey should never be rushed, he stated. Public hearings must be conducted to allow for diverse opinions and inputs. Such public hearing would also enable the broadest spectrum of public opinion to be reflected in public policy.
