task team set up to protect cargo drivers at lebombo border post

The Road Freight Association says a special task team has been set up at South Africas Lebombo Border Post to protect cargo truck drivers.

The border is a critical trade gateway with Mozambique but is facing unrest following last month's election results.

The unrest led to the closure of the border on both the South African and Mozambican sides.

Protests turned violent earlier this week following reports of police using excessive force. The border has partially reopened for pedestrians.

CEO of the association, Gavin Kelly says, Weve had the challenges of having a number of vehicles stacked at the border and not being able to go anywhere, so weve had to look after the drivers, weve had to make sure that they have access to ablutions, that they have had food and water and security. So thats the challenge on this side of the border. Going across the border into Mozambique, there is a huge risk of being attacked. So the various authorities and our counterparts in Mozambique made sure that the main corridor from Lebombo down to Maputo is well policed - that the army are out there.
