Taiwanese multinational hardware group Acer is set to start to manufacturing computer monitors in South Africa, a move which the company says will create local jobs and drive down the cost of its products.

Acer produces a range of technology products including laptops, projectors, and accessories such as keyboards and monitors, and this will be the first time Acer has developed a manufacturing facility in Africa in its almost 50-year history.

The company already has a South African website with rand-based pricing and a local office in Sandton, Johannesburg.

While Acer primarily builds hardware in China, it also has manufacturing facilities in Taiwan, Malaysia, Thailand, the Philippines, Vietnam, Singapore, Japan, Korea, India, Brazil, and Hungary.

Glenn du Toit, Acer Africa's country manager, said that support for the South African economy would help to boost technological literacy in the country.
