The Department of Education in the Free State has cautioned learners against participating in harmful Pens-Down activities that often accompany the conclusion of the exams.
Spokesperson for the department Howard Ndaba says these activities which include public drinking, vandalism and inappropriate behaviour such as tearing and writing on school uniforms undermine the values of respect and responsibility that the department strives to instill in learners.
Ndaba has instead encouraged matriculants to donate their school uniforms to needy learners when collecting their statement of results on the 14th of January.
This marks a significant milestone for many and the department urges learners to celebrate responsibly, reflecting dignity and respect for themselves, peers, and communities. While we commend learners for completing this critical chapter, we cannot condone activities that put them and others at risk. Lets prioritize safety, property respect, and community wellbeing. The Department calls on parents, guardians, and communities to collaborate with schools to prevent risky Pens Down events, Ndaba adds
