Stilfontein Illegal Mining Death Toll Rises To 88

An illegal miner, who was retrieved as part of the government-funded retrieval operation in Stilfontein, North West, last week, has died in hospital.

This brings the number of illegal miners who died to 88.

Nine bodies were brought to the surface by community members while the rest were retrieved by Mine Rescue Serviced during a three-day operation that started last week Monday.

A spokesperson for the department of health in the province, Tshegofatso Mothibedi, says the miner was admitted with gastroenteritis and dehydration.

32 illegal miners are still recovering in hospital.
