Stellenbosch University Honours Jonathan Butler With Honorary Doctorate

In a remarkable celebration of artistry and resilience, Jonathan Butler, the globally celebrated South African composer and songwriter, was awarded an honorary doctorate in philosophy DPhil, honoris causa by Stellenbosch University SU during its March graduation ceremony on Monday.

Hosted by the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, the event underscored Butlers significant impact on music and his unwavering commitment to ensuring that arts access is available to young people from marginalised communities, Cape town Etc reports.

In his heartfelt acceptance speech, Butler described the moment as a dream fulfilled, one that has come through beyond anything I could ever ask, think or imagine. It is a glorious day, one that I will carry in me for the rest of my life. I stand before you deeply humbled. I am filled with gratitude and joy.

He further expressed that this prestigious recognition is not merely for himself but also for his family, acknowledging the support that has enriched his journey.

Reflecting on his life, Butler articulated the profound legacy music has etched in his existence, stating, What I lacked in education due to circumstances, I received through music. Music became my teacher, my guide, my compass. Music has taught me discipline, courage, creativity, and resilience.
