state wont oppose bail for mabe coaccused in r27million fraud case

The state is not opposing bail in the case against former African National Congress ANC spokesperson Pule Mabe and six others in the Palm Ridge Specialised Commercial Crimes Court, east of Johannesburg.

They are applying for bail after they handed themselves over to the Hawks in Gauteng earlier on Wednesday.

Mabe and his co-accused are facing fraud and corruption charges. This relates to the 2016 tender worth R27 million issued by the Gauteng Agricultural Department to his company Enviro-Mobi.

The company was hired to integrate and formalise waste operatives and waste into the mainstream waste management economy.

The state alleges that the contract agreement stipulated that the department can only pay on condition that 50 percent of the work has been completed and no upfront payments may be made to the service provider. But it was found that, in fact, over R25 million was paid to the company for 200 motorised three-wheelers, though all goods were still in possession of the service provider.
