State Witness At Enyobeni Tavern Recalls Jumping Out To Get Some Air

A state witness who was present at Enyobeni tavern in June 2022 when 21 young people lost their lives, has testified that he is one of the people who jumped out the window when he struggled to breathe.

Aphiwe Rhawutini was testifying in the East London Magistrates Court sitting in Mdantsane at an inquest into their deaths.

He told the court that he is confident that pepper spray was used that night, making it difficult for patrons to breathe.

I dont know around what time, but during the night, I sensed a smoke that choked me while inside. So, I dont know what happened, but I saw the window and people jumping out the window. During that time when I was struggling to breathe I jumped out the window, says Rhawutini
