Springbok Speedster Andy Van Der Watt Dies At 78

Andy van der Watt, celebrated as one of the quickest wings ever to wear the Springbok jersey, passed away at the age of 78 in his home in Howick, KZN, on Sunday, Cape town Etc reports.

Known for his exceptional speed, powerful build and thrilling on-field presence, van der Watt left an indelible mark on South African rugby.

Born in Namibia, van der Watt moved to Howick as a teenager to complete his schooling at Maritzburg College, where he quickly made his name. A standout athlete, he excelled in both rugby and athletics, equalling the South African U19 100-yard record. His partnership with Toffee Sharp in the left wing during the 1963 KZN schools season remains legendary, as they scored an impressive 39 tries between them.

Van der Watt's rugby journey took him to Stellenbosch University, where he played for Western Province and the Maties under coach Danie Craven.

His reputation grew as he joined the Springboks for their 1969-70 UK tour, participating in key Tests against Scotland, England and Ireland. His blistering pace was described by rugby historians as unmatched, and he continued to showcase his talent in the 1971 tour to Australia.
