The South African Special Investigating Unit (SIU) has been granted authority to investigate allegations of corruption and maladministration related to nine Eskom contracts. The probe will focus on claims of corruption and mismanagement involving coal service contracts totalling over R2.3 billion.

President Cyril Ramaphosa has signed two proclamationsone new and one amendedempowering the SIU to scrutinise these allegations and to recover any state losses. According to the SIU, the investigation will target unauthorised, irregular, fruitless, or wasteful expenditure by Eskom or the state. It will also examine any unlawful or improper conduct by Eskom officials, employees, suppliers, service providers, or other involved parties.

The scope of the investigation includes alleged misconduct occurring between March 1, 2006, and August 30, 2024.
