Spaza Shop Registration Extended To February 28 Govt

Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs COGTA Minister Velenkosini Hlabisa has announced that the spaza shop registration process will be extended to February 28, 2025.

This follows President Cyril Ramaphosas announcement last month that all spaza shops must be registered with their respective municipalities within 21 days.

Yesterday was the deadline for spaza shop registrations, however, many shop owners have called for an extension.

Ramaphosas announcement came amid a rising number of child deaths linked to food-borne illnesses caused by items purchased from spaza shops.

Speaking at a media briefing in Pretoria on governments plan to combat foodborne illnesses and illicit trade, Hlabisa says, 42 915 applications were received between 15 November and yesterday. Out of the applications, 19 385 have been approved. In consultation with the President, the government has resolved to extend the registration deadline for all spaza shops and other food handling outlets to 28 February 2025.
