south africa celebrates 34 years since first pride march

Some members in the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer Plus Community believe strides have been made in the country since the first pride march on October 13, 1990. South Africas queer community held the march as a defiant response to the discrimination and oppression of LGBTQI Plus people.

A Kimberley-based queer advocacy group says although there is progress, the fight against homophobia, hate crimes and stigma will never stop.

Activists such as Simon Nkoli and Beverley Ditsie, among others, are hailed as those who paved the way for many in the LGBTQI Plus community to have their voices heard.

We are going forward, we are not moving backwards, irrespective of the killing that are still happening. We are not going to give up, we will continue to fight for social justice, says Queer rights advocate in Kimberley, Emma Rattle.

What needs then to happen is to continuously advocate for the rights of LGTBI people and occupy spaces for people to understand why we are advocating for this particularly rights, adds Queer rights advocate in Kimberley, Tebogo Makwati.
