Showmax's Absorbing Documentary 'steinheist' Gets 2 More Episodes

Showmax has announced that a second instalment of its absorbing documentary, Steinheist , will premiere on Thursday, 20 March 2025 with two episodes.

21 March will mark one year since former Steinhoff CEO Markus Jooste took his own life as the legal noose tightened around him.

Showmax to release more Steinheist episodes

Episodes 4 and 5 go even deeper into unpacking the biggest corporate scam in South African history, Showmax said in a statement on Wednesday 5 March.

The African streamer also released a first trailer for the second instalment, which is available to watch on YouTube here .

On 6 December 2017, Jooste resigned amid an investigation into accounting irregularities at retail giant Steinhoff, which owned the likes of Ackermans, Incredible Connection, Morkels, Pennypinchers, PEP, Russells, Tekkie Town and Timbercity.

The companys share price plunged by 90 in a week, wiping over R200 billion off the Johannesburg Stock Exchange JSE - and off ordinary South Africans' pensions and investments.

Showmax released the first three episodes of Steinheist in 2022. They received rave reviews and record views on the streamer for a documentary.

It also became the most-nominated documentary going into the SAFTAs, with director Richard Finn Gregory and producer Elle Oosthuizen winning the Sanlam Group Financial Journalist of the Year award for 2022 - the first TV journalists to take home the prize in nearly a decade. The duo also won the Broadcast: TV and Video category award.

What to expect

Episodes 4 and 5 pick up the story a month after the documentary's 2022 release, when the Reserve Bank seized R1.4 billion of Jooste's assets.

They cover his 20-year ban, R15 million fine from the JSE, his pursuit by German authorities, his record R475 million fine from The Financial Sector Conduct Authority and his police summons to stand trial.
