The South African Weather Service has issued a warning for heavy rain and severe thunderstorms in Gauteng on Sunday, which could result in localised flooding.

The Johannesburg Emergency Management Services and Disaster Management teams say they will be monitoring the weather situation overnight.

Spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi has urged motorists to use alternative routes and avoid driving in low-lying flooded roads.

Weve received a warning from the South African weather service of severe thunderstorms in most parts of the city of Johannesburg which might cause flash floods in most of our low-lying areas. Most of our informal settlements are mostly vulnerable to flash floods when we have severe thunderstorms. We already have our monitoring teams in all seven regions of the city so far. Weve not yet reported any major incidents however weve got our monitoring teams and our fire stations are fully operational and our response units are on high alert so we will be monitoring overnight, says Mulaudzi.
