Sasco Warns Of Student Accommodation Crisis In Johannesburg

sasco warns of student accommodation crisis in johannesburg

The South African Students Congress SASCO has expressed concern over the ongoing student accommodation crisis in Johannesburg.

Hundreds of students at the University of Johannesburg have been left stranded without a place to live, despite paying fees for private accommodations.

SASCOs Gauteng Chairperson Yandisa Mhlelembana says they question the accommodation administration fee system taking place in the city.

The University is renovating about two big student accommodations on campus, which has caused a lot of backlog in terms of student accommodation. Normally first years would prefer to stay on campus than off-campus, private student accommodation. However, now theyre forced to look for private accommodations that have top-ups on top of what NSFAS offers. They have these booking fees or admin fees to reserve rooms which cost around R500 to 700 when you have paid it, you are not guaranteed to get the room. That is where our worry is.
