The South African Police Service SAPS has recovered high-calibre firearms believed to have been used in the mass murder that left 18 people dead in Lusikisiki, Eastern Cape.

Police also confirmed the arrest of two more suspects in Flagstaff in the Eastern Cape, after they were found in possession of the rifles.

National Police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe says the high-calibre firearms have been taken in for ballistics testing.

Mathe says, "Through intelligence and meticulous detective work, the high-calibre firearms were recovered on Thursday evening. They include three AK47 automatic rifles and a two-for-three Steyr Maxillary rifle. Two more suspects have been arrested after they were found to be in possession of these rifles.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the firearms were moved to a different location following the killings.
