The South African Police Service SAPS is working relentlessly to arrest and dismantle kidnapping syndicates.

The SAPS has established a special police unit to track these syndicates. In the last six months, twelve businessmen and six students were kidnapped for ransom.

This week, police rescued two Portuguese business owners who had been kidnapped for ransom. Both victims were found held captive at separate locations in Soweto.

Police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe says, "Our dedicated teams remain relentless in their pursuit to ensure they rescue victims. From January to date, 13 businessmen and at least six students were rescued without ransom payment being made. This is as a result of the expertise and capabilities of our teams. In the past two years, more than 200 kidnappers have been arrested."
