The Kruger National Park (KNP) celebrated a passing out parade for 33 new field rangers in Skukuza on September 3. Graduates of a six-week basic field ranger training course, chosen after a rigorous selection process, the new rangers will provide much-needed support to the current team by boosting law enforcement and biodiversity conservation efforts in KNP.
The selection process in July included physical fitness screening, evaluations and interviews as well as cognitive and aptitude tests. The trainees also had to demonstrate commitment to teamwork and dedicated attitude to qualify for the job.
The graduates have been placed in the KNPs 22 ranger sections each managed by a Section Ranger who is supported by a group of field rangers. Regional Rangers also manage several units (Environmental Crime Investigations, Protection Services, Special Operations, K9 and Air Services) supporting the KNPs law enforcement and biodiversity conservation objectives. The SAPS, including its Stock Theft and Endangered Species unit based in Skukuza, also supports the KNP.
