Sadtu Threatens Legal Action If Bela Act Is Not Fully Implemented

Pressure is mounting on President Cyril Ramaphosa to sign the two remaining clauses of the Basic Education Laws Amendment BELA Act into law.

The three-month deadline for negotiations on the clauses among coalition parties in the Government of National Unity GNU was last Friday.

The South African Democratic Teachers Union SADTU says it will take the President to court to compel him to announce the date for the implementation of the BELA Act in its entirety.

Ramaphosa put a hold on implementing Sections 4 and 5 of the Act, relating to language policy and admission processes at schools, to allow for the negotiations.

SADTU General Secretary Dr Mugwena Maluleke says the unions lawyers are preparing papers to be filed early next year.
